Defining Your Artistic Mission

Creative self-expression burns in all of us. It drives us, gnaws at us, and calls for a form of expression. Creativity is our birthright. We are born to create. Many aspiring actors come to me asking, “Do I have it?” But the truth is, “IT” is not a yes or no question. IT is you. IT is your unique voice and the energy that flows through you. The only reason most people struggle with performing is that they’ve lost touch with the imaginative play they had as children.

This blog is about reconnecting with that childlike creativity and turning it into a guiding force for your acting career. We’ll explore how to define your artistic mission, craft a personal mission statement, and maintain the mindset that keeps you inspired and resilient as a performer.

Why an Artistic Mission Matters

Your artistic mission is your “why.” It’s the reason you create, perform, and show up in the world as an actor. When paired with a clear vision—what kind of work you want to do, the impact you hope to have, and the type of artist you want to become—it becomes a powerful roadmap for your career.

Having an artistic mission helps you:

  • Stay grounded and motivated through challenges and rejection
  • Make intentional career choices aligned with your creative goals
  • Reconnect with the joy and imagination that fuel your artistry
  • Understand your purpose beyond fame or external validation

Reawakening Your Creative Play

Pablo Picasso famously said, “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.” The same applies to actors. The most compelling performances come from those who can access the imaginative play, curiosity, and fearlessness they had as children. By embracing this playful mindset, you open the channel for your unique creativity to flow freely into every performance.

Creating Your Artistic Mission Statement

Start by asking yourself: Why do I want to be an actor? Don’t edit your thoughts—let your first, honest answers come forward. Your mission statement is not about perfection; it’s about authenticity and clarity. It can be simple, like “I want to make people laugh!” or more profound, like “I want to inspire and evolve creativity in myself and in everyone I meet.”

Here’s an example from my own artistic mission:

My personal artistic mission is to inspire and evolve creativity in myself and in everyone that I meet. I accept my mission as an actress to enlighten humanity through my artistry.

Now it’s your turn. Take a moment to write your mission statement:
My artistic mission is to: ________________________________________

Martha Graham’s Wisdom

“There is a vitality, a life-force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and be lost. The world will not have it! It is not your business to determine how good it is nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open.” – Martha Graham

Next Steps

1. Expand Your Mission Statement to a Larger Vision of How You Want to Use Your Creative Voice

A mission statement is a beautiful starting point for any actor’s journey, but it’s only one piece of the puzzle. To truly guide your career, you must also cultivate a larger vision for where you want to go. While your mission statement serves as the “why,” your vision outlines the “how” and the “what” of your career path.

Your vision is about seeing beyond the present and imagining the impact you want to make, the roles you want to play, and the type of work that will fulfill you as an artist. Is there a particular medium or platform that excites you most? Do you aspire to perform in classical theater, or are you drawn to the creativity of TV, film, or voice acting? Do you want to be an advocate for social change through your roles, or do you see yourself entertaining and lifting people’s spirits?

Example Vision Statement:

"My vision is to build a diverse body of work that challenges societal norms and empowers underrepresented voices, while also expanding my range as a versatile actor, moving between dramatic theater, film, and voiceover work."

This vision provides clarity on the type of roles you want, the impact you aim to have, and how you want to grow as an actor. Tie your vision to long-term career goals—perhaps working with specific directors, companies, or in particular genres of storytelling. Whether it’s performing in iconic theaters or breaking into animated voice acting, a clear vision will allow you to make decisions that align with your aspirations.

Remember: Your vision will evolve, but starting with a clear one ensures you’re heading toward a destination that feels true to your artistic self.

Pro Tip:
To make your artistic vision even more tangible, consider creating a vision board. As we explored in our previous blog on vision boards, collecting images, quotes, and symbols that represent the roles, projects, and experiences you aspire to can help you visualize your goals daily. A vision board keeps your mission and vision alive, reinforces your focus, and inspires consistent action toward your creative journey.

2. Call to Action: Revisit and Refine Your Mission Statement

Writing a mission statement is empowering, but its value isn’t in creating it once and forgetting it. As you grow, your mission statement can and should evolve.

It’s vital to revisit it periodically—whether every six months or after each major milestone in your career. Each time you reflect, ask:

  • Is it still aligned with my current goals and experiences?
  • Are there new insights or values I want to include?
  • Does it still inspire me to take action and stay true to my artistic path?

Prompt to Self-Reflection:

  • "How has my vision of my artistry evolved since I first wrote my mission statement?"
  • "Am I still on the path I initially set out on, or have new experiences shifted my focus?"
  • "Is my mission statement inspiring me to take action and stay true to my goals?"

Reaffirming your mission regularly keeps you grounded and helps you reconnect with your "why" when challenges arise. Your mission is not static; it’s a living expression of your creativity and purpose.

3. New Thought Mindset for Success: Staying Grounded and Inspired

Beyond writing a mission statement and creating a vision, the mindset you cultivate as an actor is crucial for navigating inevitable challenges. Treat your artistic mission not just as a statement, but as a guiding mindset that informs every audition, rehearsal, and performance.

Here’s how to maintain that mindset:

  • Embrace Failure as a Learning Tool: Each "no" brings you closer to the right opportunity. Setbacks are feedback, not defeat.
  • Stay Open to Growth: Treat every role as a chance to evolve. Small roles and major projects alike contribute to your growth.
  • Focus on the Process, Not Just the Outcome: True joy lies in honing your craft, building resilience, and pursuing your artistic mission daily.
  • Celebrate Small Wins: Every audition, recognition, or completed performance is a step toward fulfilling your mission.

A positive mindset ensures that no matter what obstacles you face, you remain inspired, grounded, and committed to your purpose. Acting isn’t just about career milestones—it’s about living your artistry with passion, resilience, and unwavering belief in your potential.
