SAG-AFTRA Strike Details & Info - Projects You CAN Work On - Production Impact
By Abigail Hardin, July 19, 2023
Happy Wednesday, UTD!
A SAG-AFTRA strike has been called after negotiations with the AMPTP fell through on the July 12th deadline. While it seemed in the week prior that a deal was promising, talks quickly fell apart over four major points:
- 14 % Pay increase
- Residuals
- AI
- Self-taping
While the strike will impact thousands of us through the duration, it is also a moment where SAG-AFTRA is fighting for our future ability to make a sustainable living and maintain viable careers as working professional actors. Over the last decade, we have seen how lack of regulation has allowed streamers to take advantage of profits and ratings while controlling who gets a piece of the profit. As cost of living continues to rise in major markets such as Los Angeles and New York, as well as across the nation, actors cannot continue to be compensated for work based on an outdated business model while the CEOs make over 400 times their lowest paid employee. I urge you to hold onto the larger perspective and view this strike as a positive.
We at the Up-To-Date Actor are committed to giving you the most up-to-date breaking news on the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes that are greatly impacting our industry. Our goal is to keep you informed and empowered with strike-proof suggestions to continue to move your career forward during this industry production pause.
We have launched a new SAG-AFTRA / WGA Strike Resources where you can find news articles and important information. This page includes types of projects you CAN work on as well as advice from UTDA founder Annie Chadwick on how to use this time to productively move your career forward. We will be updating this resource daily so continue to check back often.
Starting yesterday, active Up-To-Date Actor members will also receive strike news and updates in their daily and weekly emailed notifications. Over the coming weeks, we will be announcing new features and promotions for active UTDA subscribers. Stay tuned for more info.
Our industry will bounce back stronger than ever and when it does, make sure you are prepared and ready. We are here to help you navigate this time and move your career forward with bold action.
