Hollywood Tariffs - Free Workshop - Production & Tax Incentives - Upfronts
By Abigail Hardin, May 19, 2025
Happy Monday, UTD!
It's been a while since our last Industry Insight email, and wow, a lot has been going on. All eyes have been on the political environment and what effects new laws and tariffs will have on the industry, let alone our day-to-day lives.
The white house has proposed a tariff on all movies produced abroad and sent to the United States. The details remain very unclear. Does this apply the same to Hollywood films produced elsewhere (White Lotus) as indie foreign films with a small US release? What about foreign streaming content produced abroad and delivered to the US audience (Bridgerton)? There is no denying that production continues to be lured away from the US. But some argue this is less of a national issue and more of a California issue.
The bottom line is yes, production needs to be incentivized and brought back to the US and Hollywood. But how do we do this in a global community that fosters diverse storytelling while creating jobs and opportunities here at home? Many states, including California, New York, and New Mexico are continuing to add to their tax programs in the state budget. This is an ongoing conversation. As with everything in the current political climate, we will see how it plays out. I highly encourage you to read all of the articles below to get Hollywood's take on the proposed tariff and how it could affect our industry.
Last week, the Up-To-Date Actor co-sponsored a networking event in NYC with NY Actors Tweetup. It was an incredible night with 122 creatives in the room! Annie and I loved meeting so many of you and hearing about your upcoming projects and career goals! It's always a joy meeting so many of you for the first time and making new friends and acquaintances. And congrats to Kristina Katalin for being the lucky winner of our free raffle for a 1-year subscription!
Lastly, we are hosting one of our most requested workshops this coming Wednesday — Seeking Representation on Both Coasts. Now is a great time to start a new representation campaign. Come learn the differences between the West Coast and the East Coast and learn how to craft a submission that stands out. If you currently have representation, learn how you can work with your current representation to get more auditions and be aware of red flags when it's maybe time to part ways. The workshop is free, but registration is required.

Oh, and P.S..... this past week was Upfront week! There are a lot of articles on this as well. I encourage you to read this section to learn about how production schedules are shifting in light of the film tariff and changing timelines in general.
We are in a time of great change and evolution. Be in the know. Be Up-To-Date!
Have a great weekend!
